During the 17th century, Protestantism was the official religion of d. Dutch Republic. From 1600 up to the second half of the 20th century, the north and west of the Dutch Republic were Calvinists. Desiderius Erasmus was the most important Dutch theologian. He remained a Catholic for all his life but criticized the abuses of the Church from within. He kept away from Luther and his reform.
