Thermohaline circulation is mainly due to cold, dense ocean water sinking and warmer water replacing it.
Thermohaline circulation is the part of general oceanic circulation which is driven by differences in temperature and salinity. Thermohaline circulation is mainly due to the sinking of the colder denser water near the earth's pole which flows into the ocean basin, while the warmer water slowly replaces it near the surface at the equators. In the process, there is movement of heat energy, solids, nutrients, gases and other substances around the globe.
