The correct option is: "they were unafraid to use strikes to make gains "

The American Federation of Labor was one of the first union federations in the United States of America. It was founded in 1886 in Columbus (Ohio), by Samuel Gompers, after a reorganization of its predecessor, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Union Gompers was its president until his death in 1924.

The AFL represented a pure and hard conservative trade unionism that watched over labor conditions over political objectives and that conceived the capitalist system as a way for workers to advance. His pragmatic vision, his commitment to social dialogue led him not to challenge the property relations inherent in capitalism, putting forward agreements with the government and businessmen, and rejecting the formation of a class workers' party, which in practice It meant favoring the bourgeoisie.
