To reverse the balance of trade with China, British merchants sold opium to Chinese smugglers. In the 1780s, Britain imported opium, an obsessive painkiller drug to China. This appeared altering the stability of trade in favor of Britain. Since opium was banned in China, the Chinese had to rely on British (and other) merchants to do business with them.
