Simplify:

4(a+4)−2=34

(4)(a)+(4)(4)+−2=34(Distribute)

4a+16+−2=34

(4a)+(16+−2)=34(Combine Like Terms)

4a+14=34

Subtract 14 from both sides.

4a+14−14=34−14

4a=20

Divide both sides by 4.

4a/4=20/4

a=5
