The Patriot Act, officially known as the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001, was passed in response to the threat of terrorism after the 9/11 attacks.

It expanded the government's ability to identify terrorists by permitting the use of covert surveillance against individuals suspected of having connections to terrorist plots or networks.
