Final answer:

During the antebellum period, Southern states feared unfair federal policies favoring the North and the imposition of severe taxes, ultimately leading to secession and the formation of the Confederate States of America.

Explanation:

The Southern states feared that the federal government's policies favored the North over the South, thinking about the North imposing severe taxes on slavers would leave them defenseless and vulnerable, which led to a belief that the North would potentially impose such measures.

As a result, many Southerners started seceding from the Union, forming the Confederate States of America to preserve states' rights, defend slavery, and protect what they believed were their constitutional liberties.
