Final answer:

Conference committees are temporary bodies essential for reconciling differing versions of bills between the House and Senate to ensure legislative consensus.

Explanation:

Conference committees are temporary committees established to reconcile different versions of a bill passed by the House and the Senate, consisting of members from both chambers. These committees are ad hoc and are crucial for resolving differences in legislation.

Conference committees play a vital role in finalizing major legislation, such as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, by aligning the House and Senate versions of bills. They are distinct from standing, joint, and select committees, which serve different legislative functions.

The selection of conference committee members and their temporary nature are essential aspects of how Congress addresses discrepancies in proposed laws before they are enacted.
