Final answer:

Alger Hiss, accused of espionage and convicted of perjury during the Cold War, fueled the fear of communist infiltration in the U.S. government, contributing to the era of McCarthyism.

Explanation:

Alger Hiss was a former State Department official accused of espionage and convicted of perjury during the Cold War era. He was accused by Whittaker Chambers of passing government documents to the Soviet Union, leading to a trial that tested his loyalty and resulted in his perjury conviction.

During this time, the fear of communist infiltration in the U.S. government was heightened, with figures like Senator Joseph McCarthy making unsubstantiated accusations of disloyalty. These events contributed to a period known as McCarthyism, characterized by political witch hunts and rampant anticommunist sentiment.

The Hiss case, along with other spy scandals, fueled the broader fear of Soviet espionage and communist subversion in America during the Cold War, leading to widespread investigations and efforts to root out perceived threats of communism.
