Final answer:

Capillary action is the phenomenon of a liquid flowing in narrow spaces without external aid, driven by intermolecular forces. It plays a vital role in various natural processes, including the movement of water in plants. Adhesion and cohesion are fundamental in understanding capillary action.

Explanation:

Capillary action, also known as capillarity, is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without external assistance, like gravity. It occurs due to intermolecular attractive forces between the liquid and solid surrounding surfaces. An example of capillary action is when water rises up in thin glass tubes, forming a meniscus.

Adhesion and cohesion play a crucial role in capillary action. Strong adhesive forces cause liquids to move up or down in small-diameter tubes, against gravity. Capillary action is essential for processes like the transportation of water from roots to the tops of trees, aiding in plant growth and other natural phenomena.
