Final answer:

Plato criticized the Sophists for departing from the truth, focusing on rhetoric for worldly success, and promoting dangerous and disingenuous speech.

Explanation:

Plato criticized the Sophists' approach for various reasons. One of the main criticisms was that the Sophists often departed from the truth, promoting the idea that there were no absolute truths and that one should be able to argue both sides of an issue with equal skill. This departure from truth was concerning to Plato as he believed in the existence of essential truths and the importance of ethical conduct.

Additionally, Plato saw the Sophists as experts in rhetoric who catered to wealthy aristocrats, teaching the art of persuasion without a clear moral compass. He accused them of being opportunistic liars and charlatans, focusing on worldly success rather than higher truths and ethical behavior. Plato's skepticism towards the Sophists stemmed from their promotion of rhetoric that he deemed dangerous and disingenuous.

Furthermore, Plato warned against the sophists' teaching style, which aimed at making the weaker side in a dispute appear stronger, prioritizing persuasion over truth. This approach conflicted with Socrates' belief in pursuing essential truths through relentless self-questioning and ethical conduct, highlighting the philosophical differences between Plato and the Sophists.
