Final answer:

Alaskans criticized Chris McCandless for his choice to live in solitude in Alaska, but the author defends McCandless's journey as a quest for personal growth and self-discovery.

Explanation:

Alaskans Gordon Samel and Ken Thompson voice a strong criticism of Chris McCandless, shared by native Alaskans, for choosing a brief and uncomfortable solitary existence in Alaska. They criticize McCandless for his lack of preparation and survival skills, leading to his tragic death in the wilderness. However, the author argues that they were mistaken in their criticism because McCandless's journey was about personal growth and self-discovery, rather than mere survival.
