Final answer:

Convoys of navy destroyers played a critical role in countering German submarine attacks during World War I, protecting merchant vessels and securing safe passage for Allied supplies and troops.

Explanation:

Convoys of navy destroyers were crucial in countering German submarine attacks during World War I by escorting fleets of merchant vessels, making it challenging for submarines to target them. The convoy system, with fast destroyers protecting merchant ships, significantly reduced the effectiveness of German U-boats.

When the United States Navy began escorting cargo ships with the convoy system, it reversed the military success of German U-boats. The convoy operations with American destroyers contributed to securing safe passage for Allied supplies and troops across the Atlantic.

The Allies' adoption of convoys was one effective strategy in combating the submarine menace, demonstrating the importance of organized naval protection in wartime scenarios.
