Final answer:
European powers justified the partitioning of Africa based on imperialism, economic interests, and competition among European nations during the Berlin Conference. This division was marked by arbitrary boundary lines, weakening African resistance, leading to long-term conflicts and exploitation by European powers.
Explanation:
The European justification for the partitioning of Africa during the 1884 Berlin Conference was primarily driven by imperialistic ambitions, economic interests, and competition among European powers. European countries sought to exploit Africa's resources, establish trade routes, and expand their empires.
The Berlin Conference allowed European nations to divide Africa into spheres of influence, without African representation, resulting in arbitrary boundary lines cutting through ethnic and cultural territories. This division weakened African resistance and led to long-term conflicts and boundary disputes.
The European justification of 'civilizing' Africans was often used as a mask for exploitation and domination, as European powers sought to exploit African labor and resources for their own benefit.
