Which inference does this excerpt from Margaret Thatcher's speech support?
Détente sounds a fine word. And, to the extent that there
really has been a relaxation in international tension, it is a
fine thing. But the fact remains that throughout this
decade of détente, the armed forces of the Soviet Union
have increased, are increasing, and show no signs of
diminishing.

Final answer:

The excerpt from Margaret Thatcher's speech highlights the contradiction between the concept of détente and the Soviet Union's actions in increasing their armed forces.

Explanation:

The excerpt from Margaret Thatcher's speech supports the inference that despite the concept of détente aiming for a reduction in international tension, the Soviet Union continued to bolster its armed forces without diminishing their strength. This demonstrates a contradiction between the idea of détente and the actions of the Soviet Union during that period, indicating a lack of alignment between rhetoric and reality.
