Final answer:

The United States led a war in Afghanistan due to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, targeting Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

Explanation:

The United States led a war in Afghanistan primarily in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.. Al-Qaeda, under the leadership of Osama bin Laden, was identified as the perpetrator behind these attacks.

The United States demanded that the Taliban government in Afghanistan expel al-Qaeda and extradite bin Laden. When the Taliban refused, America initiated a military campaign known as Operation Enduring Freedom to remove the Taliban from power, dismantle al-Qaeda, and hunt down bin Laden, marking the start of a prolonged conflict in the region.

This significant event reshaped U.S. foreign policy and led to over a decade of military intervention in Afghanistan, with broader implications for global security and counterterrorism efforts.
