extinction

Extinction is the effect of an environmental change best illustrated by the cause of the end-Cretaceous extinction event, where a large asteroid impact off the Yucatán Peninsula led to the disappearance of the dinosaurs and many other taxa. This cataclysmic event altered the environment significantly, causing widespread species extinction.

Another mass extinction event, such as the end of the Triassic, also demonstrates how environmental changes can lead to extinction and spur the evolution of surviving species, like mammals and marine reptiles.

The sharp spike in iridium levels found at the boundary between the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods is a key piece of evidence supporting the impact hypothesis for the end-Cretaceous extinction, further highlighting the environmental impact of such events.
