Final answer:

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, while John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, leading to discussions about their birthplaces and presidential eligibility.

Explanation:

The birthplaces of Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain were unusual in that Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, making him the first president from Hawaii, and McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which was under U.S. control at the time.

This uniqueness in birthplaces added an interesting aspect to the 2008 presidential election, sparking discussions about citizenship and eligibility requirements for presidential candidates.

Despite the atypical birthplaces, both candidates went on to secure their party's nominations and run vigorous campaigns for the presidency.
