After Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark, explored the newly acquired territory, opening up opportunities for trade and commerce.

French settlers, German immigrants, and Irish immigrants began to populate the area, contributing to the city's diverse cultural landscape.
