Final answer:

James Estes studied the impact of sea otter hunting on marine ecosystems, showing how their decline affected predation dynamics and kelp bed habitats.

Explanation:

James Estes, an ecologist, conducted a study on the effects of hunting sea otters to near extinction. His findings revealed that the decline in sea otter populations led to increased predation by killer whales on otters due to changes in prey availability, causing a cascade effect wherein sea urchins grazed on kelp beds. This exemplifies the intricate ecological relationships within marine ecosystems and the consequences of disrupting predator-prey dynamics.
