Installing owl boxes in orchards to encourage the local owl population to nest is an example of utilizing biocontrol as a method of vertebrate pest control. Here's why:

1. Biocontrol: Biocontrol involves using natural predators or parasites to manage pest populations. In this case, by providing owl boxes, farmers are promoting owls as natural predators of pests like rodents that can damage crops. Owls feed on these pests, helping to keep their numbers in check without the need for harmful chemicals or methods.

2. Example: Owls are effective hunters that can control rodent populations in orchards. By attracting owls to nest in the orchards, farmers can benefit from the owls' hunting behavior to reduce the damage caused by pests to their crops.

By choosing biocontrol through owl boxes, farmers are promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of pest control that works with nature instead of against it. This approach not only helps in pest management but also supports biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.
