As evidence, he explains that the United States has caused a lot of violence and often pushed the Vietnamese to take up arms as self-defense. The author hopes that these questions will force the reader to put himself in the other person's shoes and understand the situation from the Vietnamese perspective.

The effect of the Rhetorical question creates doubt in the mind of the reader regarding the intentions of the United States of America. Stated, differently, the question begs the answer "Are we trying to help the people who are being oppressed if we take sides with their oppressors?"
