When you have two variables next to eachother, that means to multiply.  So that's the same as

\(A=L*W\)

They give that \(L = 12\) and \(W = 6\)

So now you plug \(L\) and \(W\) into the equation:

\(A=12*6\)

If you multiply \(12*6\) you get \(72\)

So your final answer is 72!
