A 3.0 L container holds a sample of hydrogen gas at 300k. If the temperature decreases to 200k and the pressure remains constant what will the volume be
We can apply Charles's law:
V/T = constant
V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂
V₂ = 3 x 200 / 300
V₂ = 2 L
Answer : The volume will be, 2 L
Solution :
According to the Charles's law, the volume of gas is directly proportional to the temperature of the gas at constant pressure.
\(V\propto T\)
or,
\(\frac{V_1}{T_1}=\frac{V_2}{T_2}\)
where,
\(V_1\) = initial volume of gas = 3 L
\(V_2\) = final volume of gas = ?
\(T_1\) = initial temperature of gas = 300 K
\(T_1\) = final temperature of gas = 200 K
Now put all the given values in the above formula, we get the final volume of gas.
\(\frac{3L}{300K}=\frac{V_2}{200K}\)
\(V_2=2L\)
Therefore, the volume of gas will be, 2 L
