Multiple Choice

  1. Most people in the United States use feet and miles to measure distance in their everyday lives. Why do scientists in the United States use meters to measure distance? (1 point)

Meters allow scientists to be more accurate in their measurements.

Science requires special measurements that are not used in everyday life.

All scientists use meters to measure distance to help eliminate confusion.

Meters are better than feet for measuring objects in motion.

  1. Which of the following forces causes a feather to fall slower than a bowling ball? (1 point)

gravity

rolling friction

sliding friction

air resistance

  1. A small fish in the Pacific Ocean watches a shark swim by a large rock a few meters away. Which of the following is the reference point in this scenario? (1 point)

shark

large rock

water

Pacific Ocean

  1. Which of the following pairs of objects would have the strongest gravitational pull? (1 point)

two tall buildings in the same city

two tall buildings in different cities

two stars very far away from each other

two stars very close to each other

  1. A maglev train uses powerful magnets to lift the train above the tracks as it moves forward. Such a design reduces which of the following forces? (1 point)

rolling friction

gravity

air resistance

fluid friction

  1. Which of the following examples does not demonstrate a change in velocity? (1 point)

An elevator slows down in order to stop at the top floor.

A cruise ship travels west at a constant speed.

A soccer ball is passed across a field.

A train remains at a constant speed as it moves around a bend.

  1. Which of the following does not need to be measured in order to describe motion? (1 point)

size of the object

distance the object traveled

velocity of the object

1. Nope. If the net forces are zero, it means that the object is at an equilibrium state (may be static of dynamic), and thus implies the forces cancel or balance each other out.

2. It's actually air resistance. I suggest you read about Aristotle's and Galileo's experiment about the topic (gravity).

3. Ain't sure with this one. ^^;

4. Recall that gravitational force can be measure using the formula:
F = Gm1m2 / r^2
where m1 and m2 are the masses of the objects, and r is the distance between them.
Thus, F is largest when the objects are very massive, and they are close with each other. And therefore, it's "two stars very close to each other".

5. I think it's the rolling friction, because there would be less contact between the tracks and the wheels of the train.

6. It's "a cruise ship travels west at a constant speed". Note in order to have a constant velocity, you must have both magnitude and direction as constant.

7. It's the size of the object. Note that distance, velocity and acceleration are the essential concepts of kinematics.
