Answer:
violence outside the Democratic National Convention
the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Explanation:
- The 1968 National Convention of the Democratic Party was held in Chicago from August 26 to 29, with the purpose of electing the candidate for the 1968 presidential elections. Protesters against the war protested throughout the convention, facing the police in the around the convention center, the Chicago International Amphitheater (on the streets, as well as in Lincoln and Grant parks). Mayor Richard J. Daley maintained a particularly hard line in front of the protesters, refusing to allow meetings, rallies or marches, and demanding that the necessary force be used to subdue the masses. When US Senator Abraham Ribicoff gave a conference nominating George McGovern for President, he was enraged with Daley saying "with George McGovern as President of the United States, we would not have gestapo tactics on the streets of Chicago."
- At the end of March 1968, King went to Memphis, Tennessee to support African-American public health workers, representing AFSCME Local 1799. They had been on strike since March 12 to raise their salaries and achieve Best deal. Martin Luther King is shot dead in the head by a sniper as he greets his followers from the balcony of the Lorraine motel, accompanied by his collaborators, among which is Rev. Jesse Jackson. King, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize four years earlier for his work in favor of racial equality and civil rights, was 39 years old. The attack causes stupefaction in the nation and is the beginning of serious disorders and fires that spread to other states, which results in about 50 dead.
