The Turkish War of Independence is a period in the history of Turkey that extends from the defeat of the Ottoman Empire to the Allies in the First World War, until the declaration of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. It faced the Turkish National Movement against the Allies: the United Kingdom and Italy in Constantinople (Istanbul); France in Cilicia and other regions of southern Anatolia; Greece in Izmir and the western front; and the Democratic Republic of Armenia in the east.

The French Mandate of Syria was a mandate of the League of Nations on the northern part of Syria and on Lebanon, the two territories were previously part of the Ottoman Empire. The mandate was created after the First World War and through the partition of the Ottoman Empire, determined by the victorious powers, being the most benefited France and the United Kingdom.
