You find the common denominator for 3/4 and 5/8, which would be 8. Then, the problem turns into 4 5/8 + 1 6/8. You would add them to get the final answer of 6 3/8
\(4 \frac{5}{8} +1 \frac{3}{4}\) Put aside the whole numbers \(\frac{5}{8} + \frac{3}{4}\) You need to have a common denominator(bottom) \(\frac{3}{4}\)×\(\frac{2}{2}\)=\(\frac{6}{8}\) So \(\frac{5}{8}\)+\(\frac{6}{8}\)=\(\frac{11}{8}\) You then divide the numerator by the denominator 11÷8=1\(\frac{3}{8}\) Add that to the original whole numbers \(1 \frac{3}{8} +4+1=6 \frac{3}{8}\) There is another way to do this but I decided to do it this way.
