I think the correct answer from the choices listed above is option A. The function that roots perform is to absorb water and nutrients from the soil. It is from the soil that plants obtain the needed amount of water and nutrients and without the roots these will die because it is through the roots these substances are able to go in the plant.

Answer: A. absorb water and nutrients from the soil

Explanation:

In vascular plants, the roots is the organ which typically lies below the under the surface of earth crust. But roots can also be aerial that means there are roots which grows above the ground or typically above the surface of water. The roots perform three main functions in plants that are:

1. They anchor the plant body to the ground, and provides it a support.

2. They absorbs and conducts water and minerals from the soil.

3. They performs vegetative reproduction.

On the basis of the above description, A. absorb water and nutrients from the soil. is the correct option.
