What is one difference between primary and secondary succession?

APrimary succession is rapid and secondary succession is slow.
BSecondary succession begins on soil and primary succession begins on newly exposed surfaces.
CPrimary succession modifies the environment and secondary succession does not.
DSecondary succession begins with lichens and primary succession begins with trees.

Verified Answer :

One difference between primary and secondary succession is that; the secondary succession begins on soil while primary succession begins on newly exposed surfaces.

Further Explanation:

Ecological succession

  • It is a gradual process by which ecosystems undergo changes and develop over a period of time.
  • The changes in an ecosystem occurs as a result of interaction between organisms and the environment through processes such as growth and reproduction.

Types of Ecological succession;

Primary succession

  • This is a type of succession that takes place in lifeless areas as a result of disturbances such as glaciers, lava flow from volcanoes, sand dunes, etc.
  • These regions are not capable of sustaining life of organisms as a result of the disturbances caused by those factors.

Secondary succession

  • Secondary succession is an ecological succession that results from disturbances such as forest fires, abandoned field or after occurrence of floods.

Differences between secondary and primary succession

  • The difference between the two types of ecological succession is the fact that; primary succession starts with bare rocks while secondary succession starts with existing soil and dirt.
  • Additionally, it takes about a thousand years for primary succession to develop while secondary succession takes about a 100 or more years to develop.

The difference between the primary and secondary succession is that the primary succession initiates in the newly exposed surface and the secondary succession begins on the soil.

Further Explanation:

Succession is the continuous process by which a biological community evolves with the time.

There are two kinds of succession. They are:

1. Primary succession: Generally occurs in the area where there was no life earlier or it is the newly exposed surface formed due to flow of lava, newly formed rocks or a sand dunes.

2. Secondary succession: Generally occurs in the region where community already existed and later it was removed due to some disturbances. This leads to retention of nutrient in that environment.

Both the succession leads to development of the continuous changing diversity of species within a community as disturbances of different intensities, frequency and sizes changes the landscape.

The preceding habitants modifies the environment for the growth of later species.

The succession at some areas reaches the climax stage that develops a stable community or an equilibrium stage in which there develops a strong web of biotic interaction.
