Alexander the Great
met an early and unexplained death. He died at the age of 32 while pursuing the
conquests of his empire, in Babylon. Some have suggested he was poisoned or
succumbed to liver disease. Perhaps a stronger theory is that he died of
typhoid fever. At any rate, the Greek world wasn't ready for his death, and
much disarray followed. Eventually the empire was stabilized into four blocs of
power:
the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt,
the Seleucid Empire (in the eastern
territories Alexander had conquered),
the Kingdom of Pergamon in Asia Minor, ruled by the Attalid dynasty,
Macedon (the original territory where Alexander had started).
