"The sum of their ages is 48" means x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 48 

x + x + 1 + x + 2 = 48 

x + x + x + 1 + 2 = 48 

3x + 3 = 48 

3x = 48 - 3 

3x = 45 

x = 45/3 = 15 

So if the youngest is 15 (x = 15), then the oldest is x + 2 or 15 + 2 = 17
