The answer is B: past progressive

I was walking to the supermarket when my friends rode by. (Two actions)

First:  I was walking to the supermarket ( this shows an action in progress. I was in the middle of walking to the supermarket.)

Second: when my friends rode by. (another action happened in the middle of the first action.)

Both actions occured at the same time, but one action began earlier and was in progress when the other action happend.
