The first steps in writing f(x) = 3x2 – 24x + 10 in vertex form are shown. f(x) = 3(x2 – 8x) + 10 = 16
In
order to convert f(x) = 3x² – 24x + 10 which is in quadratic form
to vertex form which will look like this y = a(x-h)² + k. You will
have to use the process of completing the square. First we will
isolate the x² and x terms.
y
= 3(x² - 8x) + 10
We
take -8 and divide by 2 to get -4 and finally square it which gives
us 16. We add these to make it a perfect square and subtract 16 so
that we do not change it. We will get:
y
= 3(x² - 8x + 16 - 16) + 10
y
= 3((x - 4)² ) - 48 + 10
y
= 3(x - 4)² - 38
I
hope this helps, Regards.
