5x + 2y = 30

x + y = 8


What number should the equation x + y = 8 be multiplied by to eliminate y?

1) Multiply the 2nd row by 5

5x+2y=30

5x+5y=40 

2) Subtract the 2nd row from the 1st row

−3y=−10 

3) Solve for the variable y in the above equation

−3y=−10

y=−10 / −3

⇒ Simplify 10 / −3 to −10 / 3

y=10 / 3 

4) Substitute y=10 / 3 into any of the two equations above.Let's pick the first equation 5x+2y=30.
