The statement that  a woman should gain an average of 25-35 pounds during pregnancy in order for healthy development of the fetus is true. However, this is true for a women that has a healthy weight before pregnancy. Underweight women before pregnancy should gain 28-40 pounds, overweight before pregnancy should gain 15-25 pounds  and women, who were obese before pregnancy should gain   11-20 pounds.
