RED

The primary functions of red blood cells are to transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues, maintaining adequate tissue perfusion, and transporting CO2 from the tissues to the lungs.

The white globules have the role of defending the body in various ways, and structure the immune system.

There are no blue globes!

Red blood cells bring oxygen to cells and take carbon dioxide away.

Further Explanation

  • Blood is a major tissue in the body that carries out various important roles.
  • Blood is composed of various components. These includes:
  1. Red blood cells
  2. White blood cells
  3. Platelets
  4. Plasma

Major functions of blood

  1. Transportation of nutrients and oxygen to all parts of the body
  2. Reducing excessive blood during injury
  3. Regulation of body temperature in the body
  4. Protection of the body against infections and disease causing pathogens

Red blood cells

  • Red blood cells also called erythrocytes are the most abundant component of blood tissue.
  • These cells are manufactured in the bone marrow under the control of hormone erythropoietin. The cells are Red in color due to the red pigment called hemoglobin.
  • Hemoglobin gives blood the red color and also helps carry oxygen from the lungs all the other parts of the body and also carry carbon dioxide to the lungs for exhalation.

Adaptations of red blood cells

  • Biconcave in shape, this is to enhance movement of the red blood cells in the blood vessels
  • Presence of Hemoglobin: Hemoglobin helps transport gases between the lungs and other body parts
  • Lack of nucleus: Red blood cells lacks nucleus, this allows them to package more oxygen and nutrients for transportation to all the body parts.
