DAlthough Spain ruled the colony for 300 years, Peru won independence in 1826.

This is the answer because the phrase "Although Spain ruled the colony for 300 years", cannot stand alone in a separate sentence.

Answer:

D. Although Spain ruled the colony for nearly 300 years, Peru won independence in 1826.

Explanation:

Clauses are groups of related words with at least one subject and one verb and that can be classified into independent or subordinate clauses. Their main difference is that while independent clauses express a complete thought and therefore, can stand on their own, subordinate clauses do not have a full meaning on their own, and can not stand alone as full sentences.

Sentence D consists of one independent clause: Peru won independence in 1826, and one subordinate clause: Although Spain ruled the colony for nearly 300 years, which it's also an adverb clause because it provides information about the conditions or circumstances that Peru won independence in 1826, and modifies the verb “won.”
