Ultimately, both the U.S. and the Soviet Union wanted to avoid nuclear war and therefore kept a nuclear war from erupting during the Cuban missile crisis.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was rather dangerous for both sides because a full nuclear war would not do good for anyone. That is why a deal was made in the end and the crisis was averted.
