Ok so here is how I would solve it. 
5 + 4d = 37
-5       = -5
4d      = 32
/ 4        / 8
d = 8
basically i subtract 5 from both sides being left with 4d = 32 and then divided 4 from both sides getting 8 = d

37 - 5 = 32
4d = 32
32 / 4
d = 8
